You’ve probably noticed that for most of my deals I recommend you search in Google Flights first to find the cheapest dates and then go to Momondo, Skyscanner or Kayak to find the cheapest fare.
I’ve written this short post to give step by step instructions about how to do this.
- Step 1: Using Google Flights To Find The Best Flight Dates
- Step 2: Finding The Best Fare With Momondo, Skyscanner & Kayak
- Why I Recommend Using More Than One Flight Search Engine
Step 1: Using Google Flights To Find The Best Flight Dates
Start your search by clicking the Google Flights link in my deal post and if you need to, change the departure and/or arrival cities.
In the example below I’m searching for a return (round trip) flight from Newcastle to Bangkok.
Click on the departure date (Sun, 10 Mar in the example) and you’ll see the Google Flights calendar.
Under every date in the calendar there’s a price. This is the lowest return fare departing on that date, for the trip length in the bottom left corner of the calendar.
In the example above a return flight for a 7-day trip departing on 10 March is £486.
Google Flights highlights the lowest fares in green and leaves other fares grey. Sometimes there’s not much difference between the green fares and the grey fares, so be sure to look at the grey fares too!
You can scroll through the calendar month by month to find the best fares quickly and easily.
Changing The Length Of Your Trip In Google Flights
Google Flights shows the trip length in the bottom left corner of the calendar. You can change the length of the trip using the arrows before and after it:
As you change the trip length you’ll see the fares under each date change.
Step 2: Finding The Best Fare With Momondo, Skyscanner & Kayak
When you have the best dates for your trip from the Google Flights calendar, I recommend you move over to Momondo, Skyscanner or Kayak to try and find a lower fare.
In my deal posts I always include a link to the travel search engine that has the cheapest fares. This is usually Momondo, Skyscanner or Kayak. To get to the search for the deal you’re looking at, click on the Momondo, Skyscanner or Kayak link in the deal post.
You’ll see a new browser tab with the deal details filled in for you. Check the departure point and destination and update them if you need to. Add the dates you found in Google Flights and click search.
For this example I’m using screenshots from Momondo. Skyscanner and Kayak look a little different but they work in a very similar way.
Momondo, Skyscanner and Kayak all search a load of online travel agencies – many more than Google Flights – to find the best fare. The search takes around 30 seconds to a minute to complete. I recommend you wait until the search is finished as sometimes lower fares pop up right at the end of the search.
When the search has finished, check that the cheapest flights are showing first by clicking on the ‘Cheapest’ tab at the top of the search results.
You can scroll through the results to compare the fares, airlines and routing for each flight.
To see details of the flights click anywhere in the flight routing (this works the same in Momondo, Skyscanner and Kayak).
Here you can see the arrival and departure times and if your flight has a connection, the connection times.
Booking Your Flights
When you’ve checked the flight details you can choose the online travel agency you want to book with by clicking on the ‘Fares’ tab (for Momondo and Kayak) or by scrolling down the screen (for Skyscanner).
Choose the online travel agency you want to book with (usually the one offering the cheapest fare) and click the View Deal or Select button.
Momondo or Skyscanner opens a new tab and your flight search is sent to the travel agency you’ve chosen. The details of your flights are shown on the travel agency’s website. Check and double check the flight details and when you’re happy follow the instructions to book online with the travel agency.
Why I Recommend Using More Than One Flight Search Engine
If you’re curious about the main differences between Google Flights and Momondo, Skyscanner and Kayak and why I recommend using a two stage search process, keep reading.
- Seeing fares for a wide range of dates very quickly
Not so good for:
- Finding the lowest fare
Momondo, Skyscanner and Kayak
- Finding the lowest fare
Not so good for:
- Searching more than one date
- Searching quickly
As you can see, Google Flights is a good place to start a flight search and find the dates with the cheaper fares.
Momondo, Skyscanner and Kayak are better for finding the cheapest fares when you already know the dates you’re searching for.
