The waterfront corniche in Muscat, Oman at dusk, with the lights from the buildings reflected in the water and the dark mountains behind the city.

Oman is less flashy and more traditional than some of its neighbouring countries, which is great for getting to know Oman’s rich culture and friendly people.

The city itself has plenty to see and do for a few days at least, plus there are beaches and lagoons nearby, trips to the mountains and the Omani fjords.

These flights are in the spring and autumn/early winter which are great times of the year to visit Muscat to avoid the searing summer heat.

Some of the Turkish Airlines flights from Edinburgh and Birmingham have an overnight connection in Istanbul in one direction. This is a great way to explore Istanbul, which is well worth doing. You’ll need to factor in the cost of a hotel for the night, so if you’d like to stay near Istanbul airport I’ve picked out the Gorrion Hotel* for around £50 per night and if you’d prefer to stay in the city centre I’ve picked out the highly rated Basileus Hotel* for around £45 per night.

If you’re searching for flights from Heathrow you might see some BA flights for a similar price. Those flights don’t include a checked bag and end up quite a bit more expensive when you add the bag charges.
